Due to the nature of roulette, a lot of people believe roulette strategy to be a waste of time, considering it is a game where winning or losing depends entirely upon luck. While there may be no strategy to ensure that you get a winning spin, there are many strategies that will help you maximize the odds in your favor. There are some simple tactics and odds you can use as part of an effective roulette strategy, which will help minimize the chances of losing.

Basic Roulette Strategy
When considering your roulette strategy, the first thing you should examine is what type of roulette table you're playing at, for not all are created equal. There are two types of roulette tables available: American and European. Most online casinos offer both versions, though some will only offer one or the other. For the best results in your roulette game, you should always opt to play on the European version.

There is one key advantage to the European table that many players fail to realize: Unlike the American roulette tables, the European table has just one zero - the single zero. The American roulette table has the single zero, too, but they also have the "double-zero" which is the same idea. This means that you have 1/2 the risk of landing a zero on a European roulette table as you do on an American one.

Other basic roulette strategies basically have to do with having good gambling practices in general. As with most other casino games, it's very important to control your betting and set up loss limits for your bankroll. The more spins you get, the more chances you have of winning; if you bet it all on black and lose, you have no chance to recoup your losses, whereas if you made sure to never bet more than 10-20% of your bankroll you'd be able to keep spinning the wheel until you hit some wins.

For a brief explanation of the Martingale system theory and how one might apply it to their roulette strategy, you should first realize that no betting system is "perfect" and that this in no way guarantees your success. The basic theory behind the system requires a player to double his or her bet each time they lose. The logic being that, if you indeed double your bet after every single loss, when you eventually win (even if you lose 10 times in a row), you will instantly win back all you've lost plus a profit. This would mean that, with the law of probabilities and a very large bankroll, you would eventually win with what is essentially a "double-or-nothing" style of betting.

There are also a number of other systems that players use as part of roulette strategy, including the anti-Martingale system - which basically means that you double your bet on each win instead of after each loss. In recent years, a book titled The Eudaemonic Pie, written by Thomas Bass and published in 1991, talks about being able to state accurately the position the wheel would come to rest at in real time, through the use of computers, something that the Eudaemons, a group of computer hackers, had claimed to do in the 1970s. This method, and virtually all other methods of cheating the system, are not possible to do these days, as casinos (both online and off) have some of the most advanced security and anti-cheating systems available. While any of these methods may help your roulette strategy by ensuring you stick to a set betting pattern and are therefore able to better take advantage of the statistics and law of averages, they do not ensure that you'll win, nor do they decrease the casino's advantage.
