Learning how to play the game of roulette is mostly a matter of learning the various different bets that you can place, as well as the risks and odds associated with each type of bet. Once you've mastered the terminology and betting process for roulette, you'll find that it's a relatively easy game to pick up and play.
Aim of Roulette In the game of roulette, a ball is spun around a roulette wheel. There are three different types of roulette wheels – American, European and French. European and French roulette wheels have 36 numbers plus a zero, for a total of 37 slots. The American roulette wheel has 36 numbers plus a zero and a double zero, totaling 38 slots. Before the ball is released, players place bets on what number the ball will land on when it stops spinning. These bets are placed on the roulette table which has different spaces to represent the various types of wagers one can place. There are two categories of bets that can be placed in a roulette game, and each category is made up of different types of individual bets. Inside Bets To place an inside bet, you must place your money in the section with the numbered boxes that are arranged in 12 rows and 3 columns. It's called an "inside bet" because the bets are placed inside the numbered box section of the table. You win if the ball settles on one of the numbers you've bet on. These bets are generally higher risk (lower odds of winning), and therefore have higher payouts. Inside bets include: - Straight bet – This bet is on the ball landing on a specific number. The bet is placed in the center of one of the numbered boxes.
- Split bet – This bet is on the ball landing on one of two possible numbers. The bet is placed on the line between two numbers, such as between the 16 and 17.
- Street bet – Also known as a row bet, this bet is on the ball landing on one of three numbers. The bet is placed at the end of a row of numbers, such as 7, 8 and 9.
- Corner bet – This bet is for the ball landing on one of four numbers. The bet is placed in the center of a "block" of 4 numbers, such as 25, 26, 28 and 29.
- Five number bet – This bet is on the line between the zero and 1. This bet will win on a 0, 00, 1, 2 or 3. Note that this bet only exists in American roulette, as European and French do not have the 00 slot.
- Line bet – Also known as a double street bet, this bet is on the end of the line between two rows of numbers. It bets that one of the six numbers will come up, such as 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Outside Bets Outside bets are placed along the outside of the numbered section of the roulette table. These are generally lower-risk bets and therefore they offer lower payouts than the inside bets. Outside bets include: - Column bet – This bet is placed at the end of a column of 12 numbers. If the ball lands on any one of those twelve numbers, you win.
- Dozen bet – This is also a bet on twelve numbers; however you place the bet on a block of a dozen numbers, either 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36.
The following bets are known as even money bets as they pay out at 1:1. Note that the odds of winning are slightly lower than 50%, as the 0 (and 00 for American roulette tables) is always a loss on even money bets. - Red or black bet – This is a bet that is placed on the ball either landing on a red number or a black number.
- Odd or even bet – This bet covers either all odd numbers or all even numbers.
- Low or high bet – This bet is placed on either the numbers 1-18 (low bet) or 19-36 (high bet).
