When considering basic roulette odds, one of the most important things to take into account is what type of roulette table you're playing on. Any player looking to play roulette, online or off, must make certain that he or she knows which version of roulette is being offered before they can accurately work with the odds affiliated with each version. There are two main types of roulette: American and European. The only real difference between these two table types is that the American version has a two "zero" slots (0 and 00), while the European only has the single zero compartment. In either version, the house will always have an edge, but that edge is significantly smaller in the European version as you essentially have half the chance of hitting a losing zero. Below is a quick reference chart of the House edge for each variant of roulette.
| Roulette Variant | House Edge or House Advantage | European – single zero compartment on the wheel | Approximately 3 percent. | American – single zero and double zero compartments on the wheel | Approximately 5.3 percent. | As you can see, European variants of roulette give the House a significantly diminished edge. If you're not sure which version you're playing on, a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that the more zeros you see on a roulette wheel, the higher the House’s edge will ultimately be. The below tables will show you the odds for both types of roulette wheel. Odds such as 8:1 mean that you have a one in eight chance of winning that particular bet. | European Roulette Ratios | American Roulette Ratios | Single number wagers are at a ratio of 37:1 | Single number wagers are at a ratio of 38:1 | Split wagers are at a ratio of 17:1 | Single number wagers are at a ratio of 18:1 | Street wagers are at a ratio of 11:1 | Street wagers are at a ratio of 12:1 | Square wagers are at a ratio of 8:1 | Square wagers are at a ratio of 9:1 | Column wagers are at a ratio of 2:1 | Column wagers are at a ratio of 2:1 | Color wagers and HI/LO wagers are at a ratio of 1:1 | Color wagers and HI/LO wagers are at a ratio of 1:1 | Again one will immediately note the increased house advantage or edge in the American version of the game. Bear in mind that all payouts associated with roulette odds reflect the difficulty of getting the winning bet, and that each casino will have its own payout table as far as what you win if you win different types of bets. Usually the payout tables are approximately the same as the odds that the player faces to win, though they will always be at least slightly lower than the actual odds so that the casino gets its cut of the profit. |
