Baccarat Rules

Baccarat is a card game that is growing in popularity. Baccarat is played at a large symmetrical table, which means that both sides of the table are identical in length. The Baccarat table can accommodate up to 15 seated players at one time. The table contains six areas – a caller ("croupier") area, two dealer areas, a drop box, discard trays and a tips box. The table has marked out player seating areas that are distinguished by numbers, as well as three betting rows that go all the way around the table. These betting rows are where the players place their bets – the first space is for the players, the second space is for the bankers and the third space (closest to the center of the table) is for tie bets.

Object of Baccarat
The object of the game of Baccarat is to achieve a hand with a total value as close to nine as possible with 2-3 cards. In order to work out the value of your hand, each card has a points value assigned to it. All 10s and face cards are worth 0 points and all other cards are worth their face value (2-9 points), with Ace being worth 1 point. If the point value of your hand exceeds ten, you subtract ten from the total. For example, if you are dealt a 6 and a 9 which would be worth 15, you subtract 10 and your hand total becomes 5.

Baccarat Bets
There are three types of bets that can be placed in Baccarat. Players can bet that the player will win, called a player bet; that the banker will win; or that the player and the banker will tie (standoff). If you bet on either the player or the banker and you win, you will be paid out at 2 to 1 (minus the commission on Bankers bets – called vigorish – which is usually 5%). If you bet on a tie and you win, you will be paid out at 9 to 1.

Playing Rules
Each player will be given a turn to deal the cards, however you may pass on the shoe if you do not want to deal. There are a precise set of rules for when a third card should be dealt:

  • If the player's first two cards add up to a total of 8 or 9, that hand is known as a "natural" and no more cards are dealt.
  • The player will be dealt another card if they have a total of 5 or less and they must stand with a total of 6 or 7.
  • The banker is dealt another card if their point total is 2 or less and they must stand at 7.
  • The banker is also dealt a third card if:
    • Their card total is 3 and the player's third card is an 8.
    • Their card total is 4 and the player's third card is a 0, 1, 8 or 9.
    • Their card total is 5 and the player's third card is a 0, 1, 2, 3, 8 or 9.
    • Their card total is 6 and the player's third card is a 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 or 9.
